“Nicole Jara Andrade uses role as president of Latino Caucus to foster collaboration, not division”
With eight executive board members, 15 delegate organizations and three committees, Latino Caucus has quickly evolved into one of the most expansive multicultural groups on campus.
“[Latino Caucus has] always been focused on the betterment of Latinx students. That’s the purpose of the organization to begin with,” Jara Andrade (senior-political science) said. “But over time, I’ve seen how it puts effort in to include all Latinx students… not just white Latinx students.
With fall on the way, what issues are Penn State student orgs focusing on?
“We want to give students the ability to share their concerns without having to run for a position,” Sanchez said via email. “We believe everyone should have an avenue to advocate.”

As the fate of DACA remains uncertain, Penn State community members speak in favor of the policy
“The Latino community does not only look to our university for education, but to know that it is standing for the students that make Penn State the university it is proudly known to be,” Sanchez (junior-political science and sociology) said via email. “If Penn State is serious about being ‘All In,’ then better resources, and advertisement of those resources, would be a clear sign of its commitment to our diverse communities.”

Black, Latino, and Asian-Pacific Caucuses Release Statement with Greek Council Expressing Solidarity in the Face of Trump’s Order
The statement affirms the groups’ stance that “we welcome and support students from all nations and of all faiths,” and unequivocally condemns “any attempt to discriminate on the basis of faith or national origin.” The groups fell that, given that Penn State “has far too long bred an environment of intolerance and divisiveness,” they needed to come together in solidarity as the “overarching representative groups of our communities” to send a clear signal that the ban will not be tolerated and “that we will not accept these circumstances.”

Zurita-Coronado (senior-political science) addressed the uncertainty surrounding the, The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program. He said Dreamers “are as American as you or I,” and he spoke about the challenges faced by young, undocumented students at Penn State.

President’s Commissions for Equity at Penn State plans to bring about more change
“This could benefit both the university and Latino Caucus by giving us a place to sit down and discuss how Penn State can be improved,” Sanchez (sophomore-Latina/Latino studies) said. “Sometimes it can be hard to get changes implemented by going through various administrators, so serving on a committee that reports to the President and President’s Council will allow us to more easily pursue our initiatives.”
